# Community shortlist checklist

Checklist · Updated 2026-09-29

Checks to finish before you visit an assisted living community: license, inspection reports, care types, payment options and a first phone call.

Use this checklist while you research, before you spend time on a visit. Print one copy for each community you are considering and tick items off as you go.

If a community cannot pass the first section, it probably does not belong on your short list. Aim to finish with three to five communities to tour, then move on to the [tour checklist](https://assistedlivingguides.com/checklists/tour/index.md).

## License and inspections

- [ ] Looked up the community on the state licensing agency's website or by phone
- [ ] License is active and covers the type of care my parent needs
- [ ] Read the most recent inspection or survey reports, if available
- [ ] Noted any findings to ask the community about

## Fit for my parent

- [ ] Location works for my parent and for family who will visit
- [ ] Care types offered match my parent's needs today
- [ ] Asked what happens if care needs increase later
- [ ] Accepts Medicaid, VA benefits or insurance, if we will rely on them

## First phone call

- [ ] Called the community and asked about openings or a waiting list
- [ ] Requested pricing and a fee schedule in writing
- [ ] Requested a sample residency agreement
- [ ] Scheduled a tour, ideally at a mealtime

Costs, rules and services vary by state and by community. Use this site to prepare, then confirm details with the community and your state licensing agency.
